VMware esxi (with IBM customized image) upgrade fails with error : "Could not obtain module order from esximage db"

Troubleshooting


Problem

When upgrading an esxi host running the IBM customized image the upgrade fails with one of the following errors (see screenshots below): Case 1 : Could not obtain module order from esximage db : Cannot merge VIBS IBM_bootbank_ibmcustomization_2.8-3, ibm_bootbank_ibmcustomization_2.8-3 with unequal payloads attributes Case 2: Could not obtain module order from esximage db : Error (see log for more info): The installation profile could not be validated due to the following errors: File path of '/etc/cim/openwsman/lsi.conf' is claimed by multiple non-overlay VIBs: set(['LSI_bootbank_lsiprovider_500.04.V0.32-0005', 'LSI_bootbank_LSIProvider_500.04.V0.24-261033']) File path of '/etc/cim/lsi/resource_en.properties' is claimed by multiple non-overlay VIBs:

Cause


1. This error is because the 'ibmcustomization' vSphere
Installation Bundle (VIB) version number is not updated
correctly.

2. The vib LSIProvider changed to lsiprovider

Environment

These errors may been seen when upgrading from :

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.0 Update 1

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.0 Update 2

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.0 Update 3

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.1 GA

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.1 Update 1

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.1 Update 2

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.5 GA

esxi 5.0 GA to 5.5 Update 1

esxi 5.0 Update 1 to 5.0 Update 2

esxi 5.0 Update 1 to 5.1 GA

Resolving The Problem

The problem can avoided by following the steps below for each case prior to the upgrade.

Case 1: Remove the 'ibmcustomization' vib by running the following command:


# esxcli software vib remove -n ibmcustomization


Case 2: Remove the 'LSIProvider' vib by running the following command:


# esxcli software vib remove -n LSIProvider
