Using Numeric Passwords with IBM i Access

Troubleshooting

Problem

When using numeric passwords, the initial logon for IBM i Access does not require you to type the preceding Q when your system value QPWDLVL is set to 0 or 1.

Resolving The Problem

When using numeric passwords, the logon for IBM i Access does not require you to type the preceding Q when your system value QPWDLVL is set to 0 or 1. This also applies to changing your IBM i OS password through the IBM i Access interface. IBM i Access will automatically append the Q character when it sees a numeric password.

This special numeric password handling of the IBM i OS and IBM i Access has been a part of this environment since day 1 and is required to support numeric passwords before QPWDLVL = 2 or 3 was available on the IBM i OS. A numeric password is any password that begins with a number. It can be all numeric, like '12345678', but it does not have to be and the password '1234abcd' will also be treated as a numeric password.

If the QPWDLVL system value is set to 2 or 3, the IBM i OS does not leverage this special legacy numeric password support and the password is not altered in any way when sent through by IBM i Access.
