Resolving The Problem
Important Note: This document discusses Client Access for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT, Client Access Express, and IBM iSeries Access products. These names essentially refer to the same product; however, the functionality and name changed over the last several releases. For the purposes of this document, the terms Client Access, Client Access Express, and iSeries Access may be used interchangeably. Where a difference is important, the version of the product is used to identify the differences. |
Client Access Express and iSeries Access for Windows provide Data Transfer Add-ins for use with Microsoft Excel. This document assumes the add-ins are already installed in Microsoft Excel. This document provides step-by-step instructions for using the Data Transfer from iSeries Add-In when using Excel 2003. The following instructions are the same for Excel 2007 and Excel 2010 with the exception that the data transfer add-in options are found on the Excel Add-Ins tab.
Step 1: Open Microsoft Excel, and display a blank worksheet. Then, select the Data Transfer from iSeries icon from the toolbar as shown below or select Data Transfer from iSeries from the Data drop down menu. This opens a new Transfer Request window. The add-in can create a new transfer request or run a transfer request that was previously saved from the iSeries Access Data Transfer from iSeries GUI interface. For the purposes of this document, a new request is created.

Step 2: Click OK. Specify the server name where the data is located.
The default system name shown matches the Management Central system specified in System i Navigator.

Step 3: Click Next. Type the Library/Filename of the file to transfer, or Browse for the file.

Step 4: Click Next. If desired, click on the Data Options, Format Options, and Properties buttons to change any of the options.

Step 5: Click Next. To save this request so that it can be reused, type a name for the transfer request. If the transfer request will not be reused, leave this setting blank.

Step 6: Click Finish. The data transfer request will run, and will then return data to the Excel spreadsheet.

The data has not been saved in Excel format. This is an unformatted spreadsheet that can be saved to the hard drive as an XLS spreadsheet, a comma separated variable text file, or any desired format that is supported by Excel.
