Additional information

It is possible for IBM to offer higher speed, better graded memory modules to use in a system that was designed to operate at a lower memory bus speed. Higher speed memory modules are selected for qualification based on their SDRAM technology, type and capacity; the qualification process is to ensure that the higher speed modules are downward compatible with the existing lower speed memory and that these memory modules can coexist and function well in the system.
 
It is important to make sure that the IBM bar-code label on each module contains a valid part number, FRU and Option number for a particular machine type and model. For example, a 1GB PC3200 registered, ECC chipkill DDR SDRAM can have the same part number of a 1GB PC2700 registered, ECC chipkill DDR SDRAM. Both modules are interchangeable. However, a 1GB PC3200 registered, ECC non-chipkill DDR SDRAM cannot have the same part number, because it is not compatible with the PC2700 registered, ECC chipkill DDR SDRAM.
