Problem
This document explains the SMTP journaling parameter that exists in CHGSMTPA on the IBM i. The reason for leaving this information for this rarely-used function is to explain the original purpose for the JOURNAL parameter in CHGSMTPA, as the paramenter is still present in current releases.
Resolving The Problem
Note: e-Mail journaling was a tool develop originally for the old Officevision product which was discontinued as of the now unsupported V5R2 OS/400. It has very little purpose in modern e-mail processing. If MAILROUTER / FORWARDING MAIL HUB SERVER are defined, the journal entries will only reflect the flow of e-mail to the mail server defined. If a remote mail server is not used, the IP address of the target domain's server will be logged; however, specifics such as sender, recipient, and completion status are not logged. If SMTP journaling is turned on, it will create records until it is turned off.
If troubleshooting an issue with e-mail processing, the preferred method would be to capture traces. (SMTP traces would usually be the most effective tool to use.)

| 1. | To change the JOURNAL parameter to *YES, on the operating system command line type the following: CHGSMTPA Press the Enter key. |
| 2. | Change the JOURNAL parameter value to *YES. |
| 3. | To stop and restart SMTP for the change to take effect, use the ENDTCPSVR *SMTP and STRTCPSVR *SMTP commands. |
