IBM Support

User interfaces available to use with ClearDDTS

Question & Answer

Question

What are the differences between the available interfaces for IBM® Rational® ClearDDTS®?

Answer

ClearDDTS provides 3 interfaces to the application: WebDDTS, XDDTS and a command line interface.

XDDTS
XDDTS is the ClearDDTS motif-based UNIX® native GUI. XDDTS can do most of what WebDDTS can do, although some functionality, such as the ability to add binary attachments, is only available in WebDDTS. Most of the limitations of the Web interface have to do with master.tmpl parsing, and therefore there may be constructs in the master.tmpl that work well with xddts, but not with WebDDTS.

WebDDTS
WebDDTS is ClearDDTS web-based GUI. For most users, the easiest way to access ClearDDTS is through the WebDDTS interface. The WebDDTS interface allows the user to submit, view, and modify records, run ClearDDTS management reports, and perform other common tasks using the web browser.

In addition to the webddts interface, ClearDDTS provides several different ways to access the product’s functionality. For example:

  1. When using a UNIX workstation that supports X windows, use the graphical user interface (GUI) program XDDTS. Type xddts and an X-windows application will launch and allow interaction with ClearDDTS.
  2. When using a character-based UNIX workstation, use the bugs program to submit and view defects. This provides a command line interface for submitting, viewing, and modifying defects.
  3. To perform specific tasks without using one of the ClearDDTS user interfaces, use the command line programs documented in the online man pages.

Command line programs
ClearDDTS includes several key programs that can be run directly from the UNIX command line. Most of these programs simply allow a user to perform a specific task without starting ClearDDTS. The following table lists the most common of these ClearDDTS command line utilities.

For complete information about running these programs and the options available, see the appropriate on-line UNIX man pages (typically stored in the ~ddts/doc/man directory)

bugs - Provides a command line interface for submitting, viewing, and modifying defects.
bugval - Prints selected defect record fields.
ddtssql - Provides a command line interface to the SQL server, allowing the user to write SQL-style queries to retrieve information from the database.
dumpbug - Formats and prints defects records to standard output.
findbug - Finds defect records based on the criteria that are specified.
graphbug - Allows the user to create PostScript graphs based on defect metrics.
sortbug - Allows the user to sort ClearDDTS records based on particular fields.
summarybug - Prints three-line summaries of ClearDDTS defects.

See the ClearDDTS User Guide for a more verbose description and details.
