Upgrades and Data Migration: N-2 Support

Troubleshooting

Problem

Customers with extended support contracts on R540 and R610 systems, who now want to move to new hardware models at the most current release will be facing migration and upgrade situations which will prohibit moving directly to new hardware at the the most current release. This document speaks to such situations.

Resolving The Problem

IBM i development tests upgrades and data migration from two releases prior to the target release, and will not support any upgrade or data migration that is coming from more than two releases prior to the target release.

This is referred to by development and support as "N-2 Support."

If the target release is R730, then upgrade and data migration from R710 or later is supported.
If the target release is R720, then upgrade and data migration from R610 or later is supported.
If the target release is R710, then upgrade and data migration from R540 or later is supported.

Examples of supported upgrades and data migration:

If you have a system at R610 and wish to go to a target release of R730, this cannot be accomplished in one upgrade or data migration. The R610 system has to be upgraded to R710 or R720 first, then upgraded again to R730. If the R610 system hardware does not support upgrade to any of the Version 7 releases, then data migration from the R610 system to a new system that supports R710 or R720 first and then upgrade or migrate to R730. This is at minimum a two step process.

A similar situation exist with a R540 system.

If you have a system at R540 and wish to go to a target release of R730, this cannot be accomplished in one upgrade or data migration. The R540 system has to be upgraded to R710 first - provided the hardware model supports R710. Once upgraded to R710, it can be upgraded to R730 - provided the hardware model supports R730. If the R540 system is on hardware that does not support R710, then migration to new hardware must be considered. Migration of data from the R540 system to new hardware that supports both R710 and R730 is recommended.
Migrate Data from the R540 system to new hardware that supports R710 first. After migration to new hardware at R710 from a R540 system is complete, that R710 system can then be upgraded to R730.
