Updating published application results in a SSLHandshakeException error

Troubleshooting

Problem

Attempts to update an Enterprise Archive published from IBM WebSphere Application Server Developer Tools for Eclipse 8.5.1 to IBM WebSphere Application Server with a a secured profile results in the SSLHandshakeException error, when using a non-IBM JVM or IBM JDK 1.8.

Symptom

The following steps reproduce the problem:

  1. Start WebSphere Application Server with a secured profile.

  2. Start WebSphere Application Server Developer Tools for Eclipse.

  3. Create a new Enterprise Archive with at least one module.

  4. Publish the Enterprise Archive to the server with all default publishing options. In particular, in the Security section of the Server Editor, verify that the following options are selected: Security is enabled on this server and Automatically trust server certificate during SSL handshake. In some cases, the initial publishing is successful, in others, the initial publication fails.

  5. Modify the application, if the initial publication succeeded.

  6. Let the server re-publish the change (or select Publish).
