Troubleshooting
Problem
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings may not be adjustable using IBM Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) after the specific Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) setting is set: # ASU setting BootModes.SystemBootMode "Legacy Only" # UEFI Setup menu [Boot Manager] -> [Boot Modes] -> [System Boot Mode] -> [Legacy Only] However, settings still can be adjustable using the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Setup menu.

RETAIN tip: H21195
Symptom
Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings may not be adjustable using IBM Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) after the specific Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) setting is set:
| # ASU setting
BootModes.SystemBootMode "Legacy Only" # UEFI Setup menu [Boot Manager] -> [Boot Modes] -> [System Boot Mode] -> [Legacy Only] |
However, settings still can be adjustable using the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Setup menu.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- BladeCenter HS23E, type 8038, any model
- BladeCenter HS23E, type 8039, any model
- System x3300 M4, type 7382, any model
- System x3500 M4, type 7383, any model
- System x3530 M4, type 7160, any model
- System x3550 M4, type 5459, any model
- System x3550 M4, type 7914, any model
- System x3630 M4, type 7158, any model
- System x3650 M4, type 7915, any model

This tip is not option specific.
The following system Basic Input or Output System (BIOS) or Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) level(s) are affected:
- v1.10 to v1.30
Solution
This behavior will be corrected in a future release of Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware. The machine-specific firmware is as follows:
| System x3100 M4 | UEFI v1.04 | |
| System x3150 M4 | UEFI v1.04 | |
| System x3300 M4 | UEFI v1.20 | |
| System x3550 M4 | UEFI v1.40 | |
| System x3650 M4 | UEFI v1.40 | |
| System x3500 M4 | UEFI v1.40 | |
| System x3530 M4 | UEFI v1.40 | |
| System x3630 M4 | UEFI v1.40 | |
| BladeCenter HS23E | UEFI v1.30 |

Workaround
Following these steps can help return Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings to being adjustable.
- Change 'System Boot Mode' back to [UEFI and
Legacy] through the F1 UEFI Setup menu at console.
- Restart machine.
Additional information
Incorrect firmware behavior prevents the Advanced Settings Utility (ASU) settings from being able to synchronize with Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings after the system Boot Mode was changed to Legacy Only.
The issue will be fixed by the UEFI firmware update.
