Unable to locate Sybase SQL Anyhwhere database server. Please make sure the server is running

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains how to resolve an error: Unable to locate Sybase SQL Anyhwere database server. Please make sure the server is running, that could occur when running IBM Rational TestManager.

Symptom

When creating a TestDatastore from the client machine, the following error might occur: Unable to locate Sybase SQL Anywhere database server. Please make sure the server is running.

This problem does not occur when creating TestDatastore from the server machine.

Cause

As the full UNC path to the project needs to be specified, the SQL Anywhere user, although created locally on the server, was accessing the shared folder as a remote user.

Even though the Security Level on this shared folder was set to Everyone - Full Control, this applies only to the local users and any groups which were given permission.

Resolving The Problem

To fix the problem, one of the following workarounds should be done:

  1. Add the SQL Anywhere user to a group which has minimum Change Level.
  2. Access (does not really need full access unless the TestDatastores needs to be deleted).
  3. Assign the SQL Anywhere "user specific" permissions.
