IBM Support

Unable to enter Hindi characters after upgrading to IBM SPSS Statistics 27.0

Troubleshooting

Problem

You have installed SPSS Statistics Client 27.0 on your Windows 10 computer. Because of where you live, you set the OS locale and region settings to use the Hindi language. You even set your OS keyboard settings to use Hindi characters.

You launch Statistics v27 and attempt to enter Hindi characters into the Data Editor and Syntax Editor windows.

Symptom

When using Statistics v27, only empty boxes are observed when entering Thai characters. This occurs on both the Data Editor and Syntax Editor windows.

You attempt to copy text from an outside source, such as Google Translate, and paste it into Statistics v27 but the same results are observed.

Cause

The SPSS Statistics JDK (Java Development Kit) in the latest build of IBM SPSS Statistics does not include Hindi character fonts which is why your import does not show the contents.  This will be fixed in a future release.  (Please see APAR PH29843)

Resolving The Problem

In the interim, you can add your own Hindi font file to work around this issue. Try the following:
  • Ensure SPSS Statistics Client 27 is shut down
  • Navigate to the directory <SPSSHome>\jre\lib
  • Find the "fonts" folder, if there's no such folder then create one
  • Next, create a "fallback" sub-directory inside the "fonts" folder (e.g. C:\ProgramFiles\IBM\SPSS\Statistics\27\JRE\lib\fonts\fallback)
  • Navigate to %SystemRoot%\Fonts folder of Windows. By default, this should be: C:\Windows\Fonts
Note:  If you cannot see the Fonts directory, hold the “Windows key” + “R” to open the Run box, then enter the command:  fonts  (this will show you the Fonts directory if it is hidden)
  • Copy the Win 10 pre-installed font file called Nirmala.ttf from C:\Windows\Fonts to the newly created “fallback” folder
  • Re-run the application, this will load the Nirmala.ttf file and it will be used to show the Hindi fonts
  • You can also copy other fonts such as "Mangal", "Aprajita" or "Utssah" from C:\Windows\Fonts if you have already installed the "Devanagari Supplemental Fonts" via the Start button > Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Manage optional features.
