Cause

By default Design Studio does not recognize mxsd as an xml file extension.

Diagnosing The Problem

Review the .log file which resides in the .metadata directory of workspace being used.

Resolving The Problem

The mxsd extension can be added as a valid XML file type through the Window>Preferences>Content Types>XML option in Design Studio. This will assign the correct program to be used to open the file.
