Problem
During the installation of Microsoft Windows Server 2008, 2008 SP2, 2008 R2, or 2008 R2 SP1 using a ServeRAID H1110 SAS/SATA Controller, Option 81Y4492, a ServeRAID H1135 SAS/SATA Controller, option 90Y4750, an IBM 6 Gb SAS HBA, Option 46M0907, or an IBM6 Gb Performance Optimized HBA, Option 46M0912, the installation may not detect the Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) properly to complete the installation of the operating system.

Symptom
After creating multiple Virtual Disks (VD) in the LSI MegaRAID WebBIOS utility, starting and completing an installation of Microsoft Windows Server 2008, 2008 SP2, 2008 R2, or 2008 R2 SP1 using either the Windows 2008 version of operating system (OS) inbox driver or IBM ServerGuide v9.30 or earlier, with an IBM ServeRAID H1110 SAS or SATA Controller, Option part number 81Y4492, a ServeRAID H1135 SAS or SATA Controller, Option part number 90Y4750, a IBM 6 GB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Host Bus Adapter (HBA), Option part number 46M0907, or an IBM 6 GB Performance Optimized HBA, Option part number 46M0912, Windows Disk Management may not detect the additional Virtual Disks (VDs).
Affected configurations
The system is configured with at least one of the following:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation, any service pack
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, any service pack
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- 6 GB Performance Optimized HBA, Option part number 46M0912, any replacement part number (CRU) 68Y7363
- IBM 6 GB SAS HBA, Option part number 46M0907, any replacement part number (CRU) 46M0908
- ServeRAID H1110 SAS or SATA Controller, Option part number 81Y4492, any replacement part number (CRU) 81Y4494
- ServeRAID H1135 Controller for IBM Flex System and BladeCenter, Option part number 90Y4750, any replacement part number (CRU)

Workaround
During the installation of Windows Server 2008, select the option to use the latest IBM Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) controller driver version 2.00.60 or later.

The Workaround action plan will allow users to manage properly their Virtual Disks (VDs) properly in Windows Server 2008 Disk Management.
