TSM password re-cache

Question & Answer

Question

How do I re-cache the node password on a Tivoli Storage Manager client?

Answer

Re-caching the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client node is necessary when a password expires or if the password file becomes corrupted.

To re-cache the password, log onto the client and delete the file /etc/adsm/TSM.PWD.

To change the password, do the following:

1. Log on to the server and run the console command:

    update admin <node name> <new password>

For example:
    TSM:SERVER1>
    update admin cs-spubox2_nps netezza
    ANR2017I Administrator SERVER_CONSOLE issued command: UPDATE ADMIN cs-spubox2_nps ?***?
    ANR2071I Administrator CS-SPUBOX2_NPS updated.
2. From the TSM client, run the following command:
    /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmc query session

This will prompt you for the login and password information. The login account defaults to the node name.

For example:
    [root@cs-spubox2 ~]# /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmc  query session

    Node Name: CS-SPUBOX2_NPS
Please enter your user id <CS-SPUBOX2_NPS>:

3. Press Enter to accept the default user ID or enter the appropriate ID. You will then be prompted to enter the new password.
Please enter password for user id "CS-SPUBOX2_NPS":

Once you do so, the query session output will be produced -- assuming that the correct password has been entered.
