Troubleshooting for Rational Suites Licensing problems

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote identifies troubleshooting steps for users that are encountering FLEXlm issues with IBM® Rational® products.

Resolving The Problem

In the License Key Administrator on the License Server:

  1. Open the License Key Administrator and confirm there are two lines listed for each type of license (one is usually green with a Type of floating and the other is gray with a Type of served by with the systems hostname)
    • If there are not two entries for each type of license, access Settings > Service Configuration. Confirm the Use License server box and Single Server radio button are selected and that the correct hostname is listed.
    • Click on the Show Licenses button to confirm the system can view the licenses within the license data file.
    • If no licenses appear from the Show Licenses button, click Close then OK. If any errors occur from here, make note of the FLEXlm # and the text of the error.
  2. Check the Ports tab in Service Configuration, to see if any ports are specified. If there are specific ports assigned, confirm the client has the same port configured.
Note: The license server uses port 27000 by default, but if the clients are outside a firewall, different ports may be designated.

In the License Tools on the License Server:

Open the License Tools and change the radio button to the right of the world graphic to Configuration using services

    • Go to the Configure Services tab and click on Save Service
Note: No changes need to be made.
If an error regarding the license data file not existing where specified occurs (even if it does exist there), browse to the location of the rational_server_perm.dat file under the Path to the license file field.

By default this path should be C:\Program Files\Rational\Common

Also in the Open dialog box, you might need to change the Files of type field from .lic to .dat to see your license file.
    • Go to the Start/Stop/Reread tab and perform a Stop, a Start, then a Reread
Note: If the reread fails, try a second time.

Note: If the licenses are named user licenses, check to see if the rational.opt file (options file) has been configured (it is also located by default, in the C:\Program Files\Rational\Common directory)
In the License Key Administrator on the Client system:

Open the License Key Administrator and confirm there is one line listed for each type of license (which is gray in color with a Type of Served by with the license servers hostname)

  • If no licenses appear, go to Settings on the main menu, then Service Configuration and confirm the Use License server box and Single Server radio button are selected and that the exact hostname of the license server is listed.
  • If different ports were used on the License server, confirm the Port field has the correct port used for the lmgrd process.
  • Confirm the entries for each point product in the License Usage Mapper
Note: To access the License Map select Settings > License Usage Mapper. See solution #1142617 regarding configuring the License Usage Mapper.
