Problem

Troubleshooting processor issues with IBM server and IntelliStation products

Resolving The Problem

  1. To begin troubleshooting, check the following top issues. If your issue is listed, select the link, otherwise proceed to step 2.


  2. Check the latest BIOS README file. You may need to update your BIOS based on your level and issue. In addition to the lasest BIOS README file, you should also check the README files for the latest BMC (or ISMP/ASMP) firmware for your system. These files may add support for the newest stepping levels and hyperthreading on processors, and provide fixes for other components to ensure that they will be recognized and work correctly without freezes or lockups. For example, the latest code may correct false POST "167" or "176 No Processor CPUID" errors on some systems. Always update the BIOS with the latest flash code whenever you replace a system board or processor. If BIOS and BMC (or ASMP/ISMP) are at the latest code levels, the system will correctly identify a CPU fault. If a CPU fault occurs and is logged, then a normal FRU replacement should be done.


    xSeries servers can have one, two, four, or sixteen or more processors. Multiprocessing is the coordinated processing of programs by more than one computer processor. An xSeries server with four processors would divide the application workload among the processors. Symmetric Multiprocessing or SMP refers to multiple processors that share the same resources such as memory and the I/O bus. In an xSeries server with four processors, the processors would share the use of memory and the I/O bus. Server processors have a heavier workload than desktop computers.

  3. If your system supports hyperthreading, enable it in the BIOS. The IBM eServer xSeries 235, 255, 335, 345, 360, and 440 all incorporate the latest Intel Xeon processors which use a new technology called Hyperthreading. This allows one physical CPU to run multiple threads simultaneously, acting as 2 CPU's. Simultaneous multithreading improves processor performance by providing work for otherwise idle execution units. Later Pentium 4 processors, such as in the xSeries 205 and IBM IntelliStation E Pro (Type 6216, 6226) can also perform hyperthreading.

    To enable hyper-threading:

    1. Boot the system
    2. Press F1 to enter the Configuration/Setup Utility
    3. Select Advanced Options from the Menu, then Enter
    4. Select CPU Options and enable Hyperthreading
    5. Select Load Default Settings and press Enter
    6. Press Esc to return to the main menu
    7. Select Save Settings
    8. Select Exit Setup
    9. Select Yes, exit the Setup Utility, and press Enter
    10. Restart the system.

  4. If your system has an IBM Remote Supervisor Adapter (RSA or RSA II) installed, verify that it is at the correct firmware level for this system, especially if it was moved from a different system. The RSA firmware levels are system-specific.


  5. If your system uses light-path diagnostics, check for any light-path diagnostic errors, or lit LEDs on the VRM, CPU, or Power Supply (PS1/PS2/PS3). Otherwise, run extended diagnostics on the system to determine if there are any failing components.

    Processor Failure Recovery (example): IBM eServer 325
    In a dual processor system, if a processor fails, the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) will:

    1. Detect the failure
    2. Force the defective processor off line
    3. Reboot the system
    4. The system may be able to resume operation on one processor. The system will not boot from processor #2 if processor #1 fails.
    5. The diagnostic LED of the defective processor and the System Error LED will be turned ON. The diagnostic LED will be lit only if processor #1 is working and processor #2 fails.

  6. Make sure the CPU and VRM parts you have installed are compatible with your system. Check the IBM ServerProven Compatibility Web site to ensure that any parts you have purchased have been tested and certified as supported in your system. When adding a processor, it must match all other CPUs in the system in speed, cache size, and FRU/CRU part number. Most IBM CPUs also require the addition of a Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) to assist in conditioning the power to the processor.

  7. Reseat all processors, VRMs, heat sinks and processor boards (if used) to ensure all connections are firm and proper, with no bent pins or damaged connections. The processor can overheat due to misalignment of the heatsink and processor pair. Overheating can cause a system to hang, lockup, and damage the system processor. For Intel Pentium 4 systems, a heatsink can be reused only as long as the original heatsink and original processor are kept together as a pair. Furthermore, the heatsink must be mated with its original processor in the same orientation, not 180 out-of-phase (the thermal interface material will not be uniform). If a new processor is to be installed, a new heatsink must be used to ensure complete coverage of the thermal interface material.


  8. Verify the processor fan operation is not blocked by cables or other hardware.

  9. Check stepping levels, cache size and clock speed of the processors. Stepping level identifies the design or revision level of a processor. The first version of a processor is usually designated as “A0”. Minor changes are designated by a change to the number such as “A1”, “A2”, etc. Major changes to the design of a processor are indicated by a change to the letter such as “B0”, “C0”, etc. With systems that have multiple processors, take note of the stepping levels of the processors. If one is higher than the other, then install that CPU in processor slot 1. If you have multiple processors installed and only one is not showing up, try swapping that CPU and/or VRM with one that is known good. If the same CPU is not seen and your BIOS/ASM are up to date, it's most likely a faulty CPU.

  10. If the issue seems to be with the CPU slot, Check for bent pins, and try reseating the processor board (if used) and ensure that VRMs are seated and are correct for your system.

  11. If your system uses processor speed jumpers, make sure they are set correctly. You can find these settings in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your system.

  12. Try resetting the BIOS to the factory defaults using the F1 setup/configuration utility at bootup.

  13. Run extended diagnostics on the processor subsystem. Replace any parts found defective by diagnostics.

Adding a processor

  1. Adding a processor (CPU) to your system can reduce bottlenecks, and improve application performance.

    Attention:     If any of the following conditions are not met, you risk losing data or damaging your system:

    • When adding a processor, it must match all other CPUs in the system in speed, cache size, and FRU/CRU part number.
    • Most CPUs also require the addition of a Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) to assist in conditioning the power to the processor.
    • Check the IBM ServerProven Compatibility Web site to ensure that any parts you have purchased have been tested and certified as supported in your system.
    • Refer to your system's Hardware Maintenance Manual or User's Guide for appropriate installation instructions.
    • The lever needs to be fully open (at least 145 degrees) before installing the CPU.
    • Some systems allow the fan to stop spinning. This is not a malfunction. The fan spins when the system heats up.

  2. Check the latest BIOS README file. You may need to update your BIOS based on your level and to prevent known issues. In addition to the lasest BIOS README file, you should also check the README files for the latest BMC (or ISMP/ASMP) firmware for your system. These files may add support for the newest stepping levels and hyperthreading on processors, and provide fixes for other components to ensure that they will be recognized and work correctly without freezes or lockups.


  3. Install the additional CPUs and VRMs. Make sure all CPUs/VRMs installed are showing up correctly during POST. You can find instructions in the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your system.

    Note: The lever needs to be fully open (at least 145 degrees) before installing the CPU.

  4. Update the operating system to support multiple processors. The operating system must support a multi-processor environment. This is usually achieved by loading an SMP (Simultaneous Multi-Processor) kernel, package, or Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) to the operating system. Please check your operating system documentation for this support and installation instructions.

    • For Microsoft Windows 2000:
      1. Open Device Manager by right-clicking My Computer and choosing Properties, then click the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
      2. Double-click Computer, then right click Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC and choose Properties.
      3. Click the Driver tab and then click Update Driver.
      4. Click Next when the Device Driver Wizard starts, then select Display a list of the known drivers for this device and click Next.
      5. Click the button for Show all hardware of this device class and highlight ACPI Multiprocessor PC from the list of (Standard computers).
      6. Click Next to update the ACPI driver.
      7. Click Finish.
      8. Restart the system for the new HAL to initialize.
      9. Verify by checking the Performance tab of Task Manager after reboot. A separate window for each CPU installed should be available.
