Troubleshooting an overheating NPS system

Question & Answer

Question

How do you troubleshooting an overheating NPS system?

Answer

If a Netezza appliance is "exceeding board temperatures" on ALL SPUs/SFIs, it is likely that an environmental problem is occurring. (The upper SPAs generally tend to be hotter because heat rises and many datacenters have the air conditioning (A/C) in the floor which makes the lower components cooler.)

1. Contact personnel in the datacenter and ask the following questions:

  • Have there have been an recent additions to the datacenter?
    • The addition of a machines at the other end of the room can affect the overall temperature of the room.
  • Is the ventilation system up to code? Has the A/C in the datacenter been subject to maintenance tests recently?
  • Could a recent heat wave be affecting the building?

2. Request to speak with someone who is physically at the Netezza appliance and ask the following questions:
  • Is anything preventing the A/C from cooling the Netezza appliance?
  • Is there anything blowing an excessive amount of hot air onto the Netezza appliance?
  • Is it possible to increase the amount of A/C reaching the Netezza appliance? For example, are there floor panels with larger holes available? If so, please put those panels in front of the Netezza appliance.
  • As a temporary solution, please open the cabinet doors of the Netezza appliance.
