Problem

General Modem troubleshooting checklist to solve most common problems

Resolving The Problem

Check the following items to troubleshoot modem problems
  1. Verify that there is a modem installed and that it is not being confused with the NIC RJ-45 port.
  2. Verify that the modem/hardware/operating system requirements are met.
  3. Ensure that you have an analog telephone system connection, not a digital system or PBX.
  4. Verify that the latest modem driver has been installed properly.
  5. Check the Device Manager for conflicts and resource usage.
  6. Move the modem to another slot.
  7. Remove any additional adapters which may be using available resources, such as I/O or IRQ.
  8. Verify that no other software that accesses COM ports is running when the operating system loads.
  9. Use Modem Properties in the Control Panel to query the modem.
  10. Verify that you are able to hear a strong dial tone on the same telephone line that you are attempting to dial out with. Test with a telephone headset.
  11. Verify that there is a direct connection from a wall outlet to the modem, without other devices such as surge protectors and fax machines.

Notes:

  • If you installed a line for the modem, the line polarity may be reversed.
  • External connection boxes may be getting wet internally causing excessive line noise.
  • Spider webs and other foreign material in connection boxes may cause excessive line noise.
