TRANS Command

Question & Answer

Question

When is a TRANS command needed in a CLIST?

Answer

The Install guide (SH12-5180 Appendix D) states that terminals connected to a 3274 controller do NOT have to use the TRANSxx commands, because the hardware will do this for them automatically.
This is true in as much as DW/370 has access to CECPs, or Country Extended CodePages, that will override TRANSxx commands used in DW/370. However the will only be used under certain circumstances. These are as follows :

  1. The display must be queriable.
  2. A GCID must be present in the reply-data.

DW/370 is able to use CECPs in the following way :
    1. Issue the TRANSxxx in any case (from DKLPROFILE in the system CLIST). TRANSxxx initializes an internal translate table.
    2. DW/370 queries the terminal, if it has extended attributes.
    3. If we find a GCID in the reply-data, we use the CECP, and ignore (override) TRANSxxx settings.

TRANSxxx can also be issued from a personal CLIST. The question arose because a customer believed that he had the correct hardware for him not to have to use TRANSxx commands, because he was using 3274/3174 controllers, mentioned in the install guide as a pre-requisite for DW/370 being able to use CECPs. However you must have queriable terminals. Also, when asked, the Change Team stated that CECPs were not an alternative
to TRANSxx commands, but an override, used in very specific cases.
