IBM Support

Total number of bytes transferred: 0 B

Troubleshooting

Problem

Upon completion of a backup or restore, the Tivoli Storage Manager Client reports that X number of objects were backed up or restored but that 0 bytes were transferred.

Cause

Working as designed

Diagnosing The Problem

Examples of statistics reported by the client are :

Total number of objects backed up: 3
Total number of bytes transferred: 0 B

Total number of objects restored: 2
Total number of bytes transferred: 0 B

Resolving The Problem

The "Total number of bytes transferred " only counts the actual number of bytes transferred in the data verbs between the Client and the Server. The Tivoli Storage Manager client does not send data verb for directories and zero-length files if there is no security description attached to the directories and files.
For example, on UNIX platforms, if extended ACL is enabled for directories or files, the extended ACL information will be sent as data verb. Hence, in cases where only normal directories and/or zero byte length files are sent during a backup/restore, the Tivoli Storage Manager client will report 0 bytes being transferred. This is working as designed.
