Problem

An error occurs when trying to read the import data from a Microsoft Excel data source in the iBase Import tool.

Symptom

Error message transcript:

An error occurred while reading the import data from the data source:

Too many fields defined.
Provider=Microsoft.JET.OLEDB.4.0;Data
Source=<location of file>;Extended Properties='Excel 8.0;IMEX=1';DataSourceName=<name of the sheet>$;

Cause

The Microsoft Excel data importing and exporting provider has a limit of 255 columns.

Resolving The Problem

Follow these steps to resolve this problem:
  1. Open the file named in the Source field which appears in the error message transcript.
  2. Click on the sheet named in the DataSourceName field in the error message transcript.
  3. Check that there are no more than 255 columns in use in this sheet. In particular check that no data, including empty spaces, have been entered by mistake in a column past the 255 column limit.
