Tivoli Storage Manager server database backup fails with SQL-2033, RC 168



The database backup of a Tivoli Storage Manager Server fails with: ANR2968E Database backup terminated. DB2 sqlcode: -2033. DB2 sqlerrmc: 168.


The corresponding db2diag.log entry shows:
MESSAGE : SQL2033N An error occurred while accessing TSM during the processing
of a database utility. TSM reason code: "".
DATA #1 : SQLCA, PD_DB2_TYPE_SQLCA, 136 bytes
sqlcaid : SQLCA sqlcabc: 136 sqlcode: -2033 sqlerrml: 3 sqlerrmc: 168

The SQLERRMC 168 means:

#define DSM_RC_NO_PASS_FILE 168 /* password file needed and user is not root

But when looking at the corresponding configuration files (userprofile, tsmdbmgr.opt, dsm.sys), the password file (TSM.PWD), the environment variables (DSMI_LOG, DSMI_CONFIG, DSMI_DIR) and the process context (ps eww <dsmservpid>, ps eww <db2sysc pid>) everything is configured as suggested in the manual.


The problem can be caused when the installed Tivoli Storage Manager Client versions have different version numbers.

Resolving The Problem

Ensure that the installed Tivoli Storage Manager Client packages are at the same level and all GSK packages provided with the Tivoli Storage Manager Client installation package are installed.
