Testing connectivity of the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle using the Oracle ODBC 32bit test utility

Question & Answer

Question

How can I test the connectivity of the Microsoft® ODBC driver for Oracle using the Oracle ODBC 32bit test utility, which is for use with IBM® Rational® RequisitePro®?

Answer

This procedure enables you to test the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle outside of RequisitePro when a user is experiencing unexpected ODBC errors/connection problems and the database type is Oracle.

The test can be accomplished by completing these two steps:

  1. Create a test data source:

    For Windows 2000
    1. Select Start > Control Panel then double click Administrative Tools.
    2. Next double click Data Sources (ODBC).
    3. In the ODBC Data Source Administrator dialog box select the System DSN tab.
    4. Click on the Add button.
    5. Scroll through the list of Drivers and highlight the Microsoft ODBC for Oracle driver
    6. Click the Finish button.
    7. In the Microsoft ODBC for Oracle dialog box enter the following:

Test data source Name = Oracle Test
      Description = Oracle Test
User = <Name of the RequisitePro user created in the Oracle database>
Server = <Service Name of the Oracle database from TNSNAMES.ORA file>
    8. Click OK to exit the dialog box and then click OK again to exit the Data
      Source Administrator
      .

  2. Test the data source using the Oracle ODBC 32 bit test utility:
    1. Start the ODBC test utility by selecting Start > Programs > Oracle > Network Administration > Oracle ODBC Test or by searching your system for the file ODBCTST.EXE and double clicking on the file.
    2. Click on the CONNECT button displayed by the ODBC Test utility.
    3. In the Select Data Source dialog box click on the Machine Data Source tab.
    4. Highlight the Oracle Test data source (created in section above) in the list of
available data sources and click OK.
    5. In the Microsoft ODBC for Oracle Connect dialog box enter the user, password, and server information for the RequisitePro user.
    6. Click OK.
    7. The User Tables button will be enabled if the connection was successful.
    8. Click on the User Tables button.
    9. After clicking the User Tables button you should see a list of RequisitePro tables beginning with RQDISSCUSSIONGROUPS.
Contact Third Party Vendor Support

If the connection was not successful make note of any error messages and contact Microsoft Support and/or Oracle Support for assistance.

IMPORTANT: You must be able to establish a successful database connection outside of RequisitePro with the Microsoft ODBC driver for Oracle in order to successfully configure RequisitePro to work with an Oracle database.
