Tendering Using Automatic Carrier Selection

Answer

Tendering Using Automatic Carrier Selection

About this task

The following workflow illustrates the process you canuse to set up a Route Guide rule and then use that rule to automaticallytender shipments.

Procedure

  1. Define your Tendering Strategies in Step 1 of Shipper Configuration:
    • Select Sterling TMS to perform carrierselection and tender shipments.
    • Set Automatic Carrier Selection to Yes.
    • Set the Amount of Time Prior to Departure for Tender to 48hours.
  2. Set up a Route Guide rule:
    • The origin is postal code area 601.USA and the destination ispostal code area 442.USA.
    • Specify that you want to do automatic carrier selection for primarycarriers only.
    • Set the Tender Method to Sequential.
    • Specify that you want to sort the carriers by rate.
    • Specify temperature-controlled van as the equipment type.
  3. On 15 May create this shipment:
    • The origin is your Chicago plant (postal code 60121).
    • The destination is the ABC Grocery warehouse in Akron Ohio (postalcode 44240).
    • The shipment requires a temperature-controlled van.
    • You add a pickup appointment for 20 May at 9 a.m.
  4. Sterling TMS setsthe Plan Status for the shipment to Unplanned.
  5. On 18 May at 9 a.m. the shipment reaches the tender timefence (48 hours before the pickup appointment of 20 May at 9 a.m.).
  6. Sterling TMS searchesfor the most precise Route Guide rule that matches the shipment. TheRoute Guide rule you defined in Step 2 is selected. This rule identifiessix primary carriers that are eligible to take the shipment.
  7. The Route Guide rule supports automatic carrier selection. Sterling TMS automaticallybegins the sequential tendering process:
    1. The Plan Status of the shipment is changedto Tendered.
    2. Sterling TMS tendersthe shipment to the carrier with the lowest rate. This carrier declinesthe tender.
    3. Sterling TMS tendersthe shipment to the carrier with the second lowest rate. This tenderexpires.
    4. Sterling TMS tendersthe shipment to the carrier with the third lowest rate. This carrieraccepts the tender.
  8. If none of the carriers accept a sequential or broadcasttender Sterling TMS changesthe Plan Status of the shipment to UnplannedPast Due. Sterling TMS does not automaticallyre-tender the shipment unless you make a change to the shipment thatcauses Sterling TMS torecalculate the tender time fence.

For example youmight change the planned departure window or add a pickup appointment:

    1. Sterling TMS changesthe Plan Status to Unplanned.
    2. Sterling TMS recalculatesthe tender time fence.
    3. Automatic carrier selection begins again when the shipment reachesthe updated tender time fence.
