Troubleshooting
Problem
Security Network IPS (GX and GV) users who are running older firmware versions might find that they see segmentation faults when running tcpdump from the command line.
Symptom
The tcpdump process crashes with a segmentation fault.
Cause
Firmware 4.1 through 4.3 on the Network IPS does not officially support the use of tcpdump. While it is possible to use tcpdump at these firmware versions, doing so can cause the tcpdump software to crash due to a segmentation fault. A segmentation fault in the tcpdump software does not impact the normal operations of the sensor.
Resolving The Problem
The recommended method for gathering a packet capture at firmware 4.1 through 4.3 is to use the Rolling Packet Capture policy. Users can find documentation explaining the use of this policy on the IBM documentation site.
Tcpdump is officially supported in firmware 4.4 and later.
Tcpdump is officially supported in firmware 4.4 and later.
