"System.IO.IOException: The file exists" error when running (refreshing) Excel link spreadsheet report (via F9), caused by >65535 files stored inside C:\Windows\TEMP (on application server)

Troubleshooting


Problem

User opens Excel link spreadsheet file (XLSX file). User clicks 'F9' to run/refresh the report. 
An error appears.
Problem only affects some spreadsheets.
  • Specifically, it affects those which have Enhanced Reporting Optimisation (ERO - sometimes known as Optimise2) enabled.
