System Time is Out of Sync

Troubleshooting

Problem

The time displayed on the NPS system seems to be out of sync.

Symptom

If multiple NTP services are running on the NPS system, errors such as the following may appear in the /var/log/messages file:

Dec 18 13:13:41 system1 ntpd[9992]: sendto(10.244.244.244): Bad file descriptor
Dec 18 13:20:11 system1 ntpd[14903]: sendto(62.52.175.195): Bad file descriptor

Resolving The Problem

If the NTP service logs a message similar to the ones above using multiple process ID numbers (PIDs), this may be an indication that the service is not running properly.  To correct this, run the following commands:
    1. service ntpd stop
    2. killall ntpd
    3. service ntpd start

If any NTP processes remained after stopping the ntpd service, the killall command stopped any remaining PIDs associated with that service.  Starting the service causes NPS to synchronize with the appropriate NTP server and thereby report the correct time.
