System is powered off by IMM reset when system is started from backup UEFI - Servers

Troubleshooting


Problem

When a system is started from the backup Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware bank, resetting the Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) will cause the system to power off after 2-3 minutes. The following message is seen during Power OnSelf Test (POST) when started from the backup UEFI firmware bank: Firmware BIOS (ROM) corruption was detected on system.

Symptom

When a system is started from the backup Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware bank, resetting the Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) will cause the system to power off after 2-3 minutes.

The following message is seen during Power On Self Test (POST) when started from the backup UEFI firmware bank:

Firmware BIOS (ROM) corruption was detected on system.

Affected configurations

The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

The following system firmware levels are affected:

  • Build IDs: 1AOO34Y, 1AOO34Z, 1AOO40A, 1AOO36R, 1AOO40E

Solution

This behavior has been corrected in Integrated Management Module II (IMM2) firmware update version 2.50 Build ID: 1AOO40Z and later.

The file will be available by selecting the appropriate Product Group, type of System, Product name, Product machine type, and Operating system on IBM Support's Fix Central web page, at the following URL:

Workaround

Recover the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware from the primary UEFI firmware bank using the methods documented in the System x Problem Determination and Service Guide (PDSG) or the Flex System Installation and Service Guide that can be found at the following URL:
