Symptom

The system will hang when running the memory test tool (Memtest86) that is packaged with the following Operating Systems (OS):

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (SLES10) Update 2
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5) Update 2
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5) Update 3

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM Servers:

System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 6380, any model
System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7321, any model
System x iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7323, any model
System x3400 M2, type 7836, any model
System x3400 M2, type 7837, any model
System x3500 M2, type 7839, any model

This tip is not option specific.

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, Update 2, Update 3
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, Service Pack 2, Service Pack 2

Note: This does not imply that the network operating system will work under all combinations of hardware and software.

Solution

This behavior is corrected in Memtest86+ v2.10, or newer.

Additional information

In SLES10 Update 2, the version of the third party memory test tool packaged on the install CD/DVD is Memtest86 v3.2. RHEL5 Update 2 and RHEL5 Update 3 contain Memtest86+ v1.65.

Memtest86 v3.2 and Memtest86+ v1.65 do not support the ICH10 Southbridge or Intel Core i7 Central Processing Unit (CPU).

ICH10 and the Intel Core i7 CPU are supported by Memtest86+ v2.10, or newer.
