Symptom
When you attempt to power on the system, the video does not appear, and the system halts. This behavior is caused by a problem with the Intel Pentium III processor.

Affected configurations
The system is a Netfinity 5000 server, type 8659, any model, and it is configured with a 650MHz or 700MHz processor.

Solution
Intel has documented this problem, which relates to the Pentium III processors, and they will produce a solution to the problem during a future production; however, IBM has provided a workaround solution through the use of the onboard system management processor. Download and apply the IBM Netfinity 5000 Advanced System Management Processor Firmware Update diskette version 2.12.

NOTE: The detailed instructions on the update procedure are included in the readme file on the downloadable diskette image.

Workaround
As an alternative to the System Management firmware upgrade, power off the system and power on the system. The system should boot up normally after a cold boot.
