RETAIN tip: H196024
Symptom
In a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) system with legacy support, once a legacy transition has occurred, UEFI boot is not possible.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 6380, any model
- iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7321, any model
- iDataPlex dx360 M2 Server, type 7323, any model
- System x3400 M2, type 7836, any model
- System x3400 M2, type 7837, any model
- System x3500 M2, type 7839, any model
- System x3550 M2, type 4198, any model
- System x3550 M2, type 7946, any model
- System x3650 M2, type 4199, any model
- System x3650 M2, type 7947, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The system has the symptom described above.
Workaround
The system is working as designed because this behavior is part of the original UEFI system design.
Additional information
This behavior is part of the original UEFI system design. The following scenarios describe when a legacy transition may occur:
- A legacy transition will be caused by a Preboot eXecution Environment (PXE) setting of "Both" or "Legacy Only" when processing the PXE Boot option.
- A legacy transition will be caused by a legacy CD in the CD/DVD-ROM drive when processing the CD/ROM Boot option.
- A legacy transition will be caused by hard drive media with a Master Boot Record (MBR) partition when processing the appropriate boot option (Universal Serial Bus (USB) key, Hard Disk, Embedded Hypervisor, etc).
