Symptom

An IBM eServer xSeries 335 with two processors installed could experience a spontaneous system reboot, incomplete power on self-test (POST), System Management Interrupt (SMI) CPU2 errors, Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) errors, or errors in the error log.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:

  • IBM eServer xSeries 335, type 8676, any model
  • IBM eServer xSeries 335, type 8830, any model

The system is configured with two processors.

The speed of the configured processors is either 2.8GHz or 2.4GHz.

Solution

The VRM has a defect and should be replaced with replacement part number (FRU) 74P4407.

Note: The FRU will be available form 1st July 2003. The original FRU, 49P2085, may also be used as long as it is a Rev C part. See Label for Rev letter.

Additional information

A small number of faulty VRMs were manufactured. Due to this defect, they could lose a phase and the system could begin to see the errors descibed above.
