syncmgr_server fails to initialize correctly with ClearCase 7.1 installation



The syncmgr_server fails to initialize correctly when installing or upgrading to IBM Rational ClearCase 7.1. Subsequent attempts by the albd to start the syncmgr_server fail.


After upgrading to or installing ClearCase 7.1, the syncmgr fails to start and the following errors are seen in the Microsoft Windows Event Viewer Applications Logs as well as in the ClearCase logs.

albd log

 "The syncmgr_server.exe never went busy (may be looping), marking it as down"

"Server syncmgr_server.exe died on startup; marking it as down.

 syncmgr log:

"Unable to contact albd_server on host <local hostname>"

"Could not get handle for the albd on this host: timed out trying to communicate with ClearCase remote server.",

"RPC init failure",

"Failed to init syncmgr", "\multisite\etc\syncmgr\syncmgr_dbstart.cxx:295: operation dt_open on syncmgrdb failed ...",

 "Failed to setup DB session"


During the installation procedure the syncmgr_server attempts to create the syncmgrdb before the lockmgr service has started causing it to fail.

Resolving The Problem


  1. Delete the <ClearCase Install Directory>\var\syncmgrdb directory after the installation is complete
  2. Start the syncmgr_server:

    cleartool serveradmin -enable syncmgr_server

    This recreates the syncmgrdb and starts the syncmgrsvr.

    Note: If upgrading, the directory can be replaced with the pre-upgrade version before starting the syncmgr.
