Problem

After updating the DLink Ethernet Switch Module (ESM) firmware, the switch settings have changed.

Resolving The Problem

Source

RETAIN tip: H182252

Symptom

After updating the DLink Ethernet Switch Module (ESM) firmware, the switch settings have changed.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM eServer systems:

  • an IBM eServer BladeCenter, type 8677, any model.

The system is configured with one (1) or more of the following:

  • BladeCenter 4-port Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module, Option part number (p/n) 13N0568, Field Replacement Unit (FRU) p/n 13N0557.

The versions below 092 of Firmware for the DLink ethernet switch module are affected.

Solution

The warning message is added to the 4-Port Ethernet Switch Module Firmware version 092 (or later) to remind the user to save changes before updating firmware.

Additional information
Un-Saved changes can be lost for any restart, power loss, or switch unplugging. Save Changes under Maintenance is key to this problem. "APPLY" only saves changes to VOLATILE RAM. VOLATILE changes are lost with any restart or reboot of the switch (such as following a firmware update). To make changes NON-VOLATILE they must be saved to NVRAM. The Restart command warns the following and provides only the option to save settings before restarting. If you do not save the settings, all changes made in this session will be lost.

The Update Firmware command only warns, as follows:

This operation will cause the switch to reboot.

Do you want to proceed?" OK or CANCEL.

To help users avoid the loss of configured entries, the Upgrade Firmware warning message has been expanded to:

This operation will cause the switch to restart.

Any changes made during this session that were not saved to NVRAM will be lost.

Do you want to proceed? OK or CANCEL.

If necessary the user can CANCEL and Save Changes before performing the Upgrade Firmware command.
