How To
Summary
The MAC randomization feature helps Android devices to use a randomized MAC address when connecting to a Wi-Fi network and increases the user privacy. Historically, devices use the factory MAC address to associate to a Wi-Fi network. The factory MAC address is globally unique and static, allowing the device to be tracked and individually identified.
Steps
The administrators can enable this option by following the steps.
- From the IBM MaaS360 Portal Home page, select Security and click Policies.
- Click any policy to open the Kiosk mode.
- Select Configure settings and click Android Enterprise Settings.
- Select WiFi and expand the Wi-Fi Profile.
- Set Configure Wi-Fi to Yes.
- Click MAC randomization mode and set the value. You can select one of the following options to set the MAC randomization or disable the MAC randomization feature. By default, Randomized MAC is selected.
- Use device MAC - No randomization
- Impact on Device: The device uses its original MAC address, which remains constant across all networks.
- Use Case: This option is important for networks that rely on MAC address filtering for security purposes, such as enterprise networks or specific home network configurations. The network administrators can identify and authenticate devices based on a known, consistent MAC address.
- Use automatic MAC randomization
- Impact on Device: The MAC address is automatically randomized for each new network.
- Use Case: This option is useful in scenarios where privacy is important, but manual configuration is not needed. The device automatically handles MAC randomization, providing a balance between security and convenience.
- Use persistent MAC randomization
- Impact on Device: The device uses the same randomized MAC address for a specific network, but a different MAC address for different networks.
- Use Case: This option balances privacy and usability. A persistent MAC address for a known network ensures that the device is still identifiable on that network, which is useful for networks that require consistent identification, such as enterprise networks or home Wi-Fi. This helps to collect data where you can track the device usage over time within a trusted network, while still providing privacy when connecting to other networks.
- Use non-persistent MAC randomization
- Impact on Device: The MAC address is randomized every time the device connects to a network. This makes it nearly impossible for networks to track the device across different sessions.
- Use Case: This option is ideal for users who prioritize privacy and security. Since the MAC address changes with every connection, it becomes much harder for third parties to track the device’s activities or location. This is particularly useful in environments where security is a major concern, such as public Wi-Fi hotspots, preventing tracking and profiling of users.
- Use device MAC - No randomization
To view the setting on a device,
- Go to Settings and click Network details.
- Click Privacy.
The user can view that the Privacy is set to Use randomized MAC by default on the Android device.
