IBM Support

Supported configurations for TSM operations using NDMP

Question & Answer

Question

What configurations does Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) support for backup and recovery operations using Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP)?

Answer

TSM supports a topology in which the TSM server directs the NAS file server to back up and recover file systems using tape drives that are accessible to the NAS device. In this topology, the TSM client provides a user interface for initiating, monitoring, and cancelling NDMP operations. Drives used for NDMP operations must be connected to the NAS device via SCSI or FC. One configuration allows the TSM server to control the library robotics directly, in the same manner as is used for other TSM operations. For SCSI- or FC-attached libraries, an alternative configuration allows the TSM server to control library robotics indirectly by passing SCSI commands through the NAS device to the library; this configuration allows the NAS device and tape library to be at a remote location from the TSM server.
