Below is a summary of the service names and purposes:

| IBM Cognos | Cognos Analytics (report server) service  | Running (should always be running, otherwise Cognos Analytics will fail) | Automatic |
| IBM Cognos Controller Batch Service | Periodically checks all the databases (via the UDL files) to see if any batch jobs (for example consolidations, optimisations, and so on) need to be performed  | Running (should always be running, otherwise no batch jobs will get processed) | Automatic |
| IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation | This is linked to the COM+ application "IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation" - The service only runs if the COM+ application is triggered to run  For more information, see separate IBM Technote #257849 | Stopped (This will change to 'Running' for the duration of when a user runs a consolidation, plus a few minutes afterwards, before changing back to stopped) | Manual |
