Problem
How to find out how much memory is needed for STRASPBAL to run well against the system ASP or *SYSBASE in the machine pool.
Resolving The Problem
STRASPBAL needs a lot of storage in the machine pool because it has to page in the permanent storage directory to find which extents it can move. If the machine pool is small, this can cause a lot of faulting and very poor performance. To find the size of the PERM SM directory for *SYSBASE, you should do the following:

Dump of 8020800001 008000 for 4K:
a. Issue the STRSST command. b. Select Option 1. Start a service tool c. Select Option 4. Display/Alter/Dump d. Select Option 2. Dump to printer e. Select Option 5. Starting address f. Type the following and press Enter: Address . . . . . . 8020800001 008000
Length . . . . . . 001000 g. Type the following and press Enter: Dump title . . . . . . . . . . . PERM DIR

Look for the 8 byte value at offset 8038. Refer to the example below:

| 3. | Convert this number from hex to decimal (in our example, 70 becomes 112). |
| 4. | Multiply by 16 and you will get the result in MB (in our example, 1792). |
Note: If QMGTOOLS is installed, the directory size can be found by running GO QMGTOOLS/INTMNU and then take the option for SYSBASE PERM SM size.
For STRASPBAL to run without affecting the performance of the tasks already running in the machine pool, you would possibly want to increase the size of the machine pool by the size of the perm directory. For example, if the machine pool was set at 2500MB, you might want to consider increasing it to 4292MB in order to avoid performance problems in the machine pool.
Note: The above steps will only work for the *SYSBASE perm directory; it does not include the permanent directory for any IASPs.
