Sterling TMS Terms
This topic defines transportation terms that are used inthis guide.
- Shipment
The load of freight that the shipper hires your company todeliver. When you accept a tender and then track the pickup and deliveryyou are working with the shipment.
Each shipment in Sterling TMS has a shipmentidentifier (SID) number.
A shipment can contain one or moreorders.
- Order
A collection of items that are being delivered from one originto one destination.
An order can contain one or more items.
- Shipper
The manufacturer retailer or other organization that is licensedto use Sterling TMS.The shipper is the organization that hires your company to deliverfreight.
Each shipper defines which carriers are part of thatshipper's network. These are the carriers the shipper wants to workwith in Sterling TMS.
- Supplier
A manufacturer or vendor that is delivering goods to the Sterling TMS shipper.
Forexample the shipper hires a carrier to deliver raw materials fromthe supplier to the shipper's manufacturing plant. This is consideredan inbound shipment.
- Customer
A retail company or other organization that is receiving goodsfrom the Sterling TMS shipper.
Forexample the shipper hires a carrier to deliver packaged goods fromthe shipper's warehouse to the retailer's distribution center. Thisis considered an outbound shipment.
- Location
A specific plant warehouse or facility. Shipments are pickedup and delivered to locations.
- Origin
The location where the shipment is picked up.
In a multi-stopshipment each order can be picked up at a different origin.
- Destination
The location where the shipment is delivered.
In a multi-stopshipment each order can be delivered to a different destination.
- Plan Status
The status of the shipment during the tendering process:
- An unplanned shipment has not been tendered yet.
- A tendered shipment has been offered to one or more carriers.
- A covered shipment shows that a carrier accepted the tender andagreed to take the load.
- Shipment Status
The status of a shipment during the delivery cycle such asdeparted or arrived.
- Declining load
Turning down a tender from a shipper.
- Rejecting load
Turning down a covered shipment after you have accepted thetender from the shipper.
- Rating
The process of calculating the shipment charges in Sterling TMS.
Sterling TMS uses the contractbetween the shipper and each carrier to rate the shipping charges.
- Manifest
A detailed list of the items being delivered in each shipment.
- Mode
The transportation mode such as truckload LTL parcel orintermodal.
- Out-of-route distance
The extra distance that a carrier travels to make interim stopson a multi-stop delivery. Sterling TMS subtractsthe direct distance from the origin to the final destination fromthe total route distance.
- Linehaul rate
The charge for delivering a shipment from the origin to thedestination. The linehaul rate does not include any accessorial charges.
- Planned accessorial
A charge that Sterling TMS automaticallyapplies to every shipment that is rated using a contract that containsthat accessorial.
- Unplanned accessorial
A charge that the shipper or carrier can assign to individualshipments. The unplanned accessorial must be assigned to the contractthat was used to rate the shipment.
- Manual charge
A charge that the shipper or carrier can assign to a shipmentthat was not rated using a Sterling TMS contract.
- Voucher
A summary of shipment charges that is generated by Sterling TMS. Shippersand carrier can use the Freight Payment module to manage voucheredcharges.
