Question & Answer

Question

Sterling TMS Processing of Status Transactions

Answer

Sterling TMS Processing of Status Transactions

Sterling TMS usesthe following rules to process EDI 214 status updates for shipmentsand orders:

Update with single order

If the carrier submits an EDI 214 update for a single order Sterling TMS sends theshipper an EDI 214 status transaction for only that order.

Update with multiple orders

If the carrier submits an EDI 214 update that contains multipleorder numbers Sterling TMS sendsthe shipper one EDI 214 status transaction for each order it receives.

Update without orders

If the carrier submits an EDI 214 update that does not containany order numbers Sterling TMS performsthe following steps:

  1. Applies the status update to the shipment.
  2. Determines which stops or orders the status update applies to.
  3. Sends the shipper one EDI 214 status transaction for all the affectedorders.
Shipment shells

The shipment shell feature is used to support the receipt ofshipment status transactions before you enter the shipment in Sterling TMS.

Forexample the carrier submits an EDI 214 transaction to send in a statusupdate for a shipment. Sterling TMS determinesthat the shipment does not exist in the system and creates a shipmentshell to store the updates. When the shipper submits the shipmentto Sterling TMS thesystem applies the updates to the new shipment.

Sterling TMS uses the followingrules to process the status updates:

  • Sterling TMS doesnot send the shipper any EDI 214 status or appointment transactionsif the shipment does not exist in the system.
  • When the shipment is entered in Sterling TMS the systemapplies the status transactions to the shipment and sends the shipperany EDI 214 transactions that it is profiled to receive.
Sending appointments

In the Connectivity step of the Organization Profile you specifywhen you want to receive status updates as EDI 214 transactions orXML.

One option is to have Sterling TMS include appointmentchanges in the EDI 214 status transactions you receive. This approachreduces the number of EDI 214 transactions you have to process.

Notes:
  • Sterling TMS onlysends the EDI 214 status transaction when the status is changed. Sterling TMS does not sendthe EDI 214 as soon as the carrier submits an appointment.
  • Appointments do not apply to EDI 214 status transactions that Sterling TMS sends youfor ETA changes.
