Steps to Delete and Re-Create a Tape Device Description

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document provides steps that can be used to delete and re-create a tape device description. This might be necessary if the tape device is changed or replaced and auto-configuration is not turned on.

Resolving The Problem

This document provides steps that can be used to delete and re-create a tape device description. This might be necessary if the tape device is changed or replaced and auto-configuration is not turned on.

Note: Do not automatically delete and re-create a tape device description if the joblog of a failed save states the device is damaged. This may only be because the save failed and the device was put into a failed status by the recovery process. After collecting any data required for problem determination, you should try to vary off and then vary on the device first.

Deleting a tape device description
1. WRKDEVD *TAP and locate the tape device description that you would like to delete.
2. Select Opt 5=Display next to the tape DEVD to display the current values for the device description, and take note of the current settings. You can use opt 6 to print the device description or take screen shots prior to deleting it for later reference.
3. Press F3 to exit the 'Display Device Description' screen.
4. Select Opt 8=Work with status at the 'Work with Device Descriptions' screen and ensure that the device description is varied off. To vary the drive off, select Opt 2=Vary off. Then press F3 to exit the 'Work with Configuration Status' screen.
5. At the 'Work with Device Descriptions' screen, select Opt 4=Delete next to the tape device description you would like to delete.

Creating a tape device description
1. Use the Work with Hardware Resource (WRKHDWRSC) command to determine tape controller name (IOA).
WRKHDWRSC TYPE(*STG)
2. Locate the tape controller on the Work with Hardware Resources display.
3. Type 9 (Work with resource) next to tape controller name and press Enter.

Note: If the tape controller is not listed on the display, you need to select other resources, such as disk storage controllers. For some server models, tape units are attached through combined-function IOPs. You should look through the resources until you find the tape unit you want.
4. Locate the resource name for the tape unit (for example, TAP01).
5. Type 5 (Work with Configuration Descriptions) in the Opt column next to the tape resource name, and press the Enter key. You are shown the Work with Configuration Descriptions display.
6. Type 1 (Create) in the Opt field and a tape device description name (for example, TAP01) in the Description field. Press Enter. You are shown the Create Device Description (Tape) display.
7. Change any values that you want to change (you can refer to the spool file or screen shots take before the original device description was deleted).  Press Enter (two times) to create the device description. You are shown the Work with Configuration Descriptions display again. The device that you created should appear on the display.
8. Type 8 (Work with configuration status) in front of the new device description. You are shown the Work with Configuration Status display.
9. Type 1 (Vary on or Make available) in front of the new device. If the status does not change to Varied On or Available, you should wait a few minutes. Then press F5 (Refresh). If the status still does not change to Varied On or Available, follow normal problem analysis for the device.
10 Press F3 until you return to the main menu.
