Troubleshooting
Problem
How to clear the system ASP at DST.
Resolving The Problem
Clearing the system ASP deletes the Operating System and everything below it, leaving the Licence Internal Code and its PTFs and the Disk configuration intact. In some cases, these procedures can be used as an alternative to a full scratch of a system. This can save several hours on a migration to a new system and can also be used for other issues with proper authority. Of course, we need to make sure that the reason we are doing this is valid and will not cause greater harm.
Below are the steps for clearing the System ASP:
1. IPL the system in B/M to DST.
2. Sign into DST with QSECOFR.
3. Take Option 4--Work with Disk Units.
4. Take Option 1--Work with Disk configuration.
5. Take Option 3--Work with ASP configuration.
6. Take Option 4--Delete ASP Data.
7. Select the ASP you wish to delete the data from and press Enter.
8. Confirm.
9. Exit DST back to the IPL or Install the Operating System screen.
You are now ready to start the installation of the Operating System from media. As stated above, the License Internal Code with its PTFs and the disk configuration are still intact.
| Warning: Do not use this procedure if the reason for a scratch is due to damage, bad disk pages, or DASD/cache hardware errors - clearing the ASP opens up a potential to run into these problems later. Also, most of the data remains physically on disk, so this is not a secure way of erasing data from the system. Note: The ASP will not change in in the percent full until the system is IPLed up past storage management. |
