Troubleshooting
Problem
This document discusses the inability to use the stapling function with Host Print Transform (HPT).
Resolving The Problem
The Corner staple (CORNERSTPL) parameter in a printer file is supported by Print Services Facility/400 (PSF/400) when printing to an IPDS-capable laser printer with a stapler attachment. However, the CORNERSTPL parameter is not supported by Host Print Transform (HPT). Therefore, there is no support for controlling the stapler attachment when printing on an ASCII laser printer using a *LAN 3812 device description, a Remote Output Queue (RMTOUTQ), or a PC5250 or TN5250e printer session.
There is no PCL control that can be sent to the printer that would activate this stapling feature on an ASCII laser printer, so the only way to automatically staple spooled files is to use a *LCL or *LAN *IPDS device description that has the Advanced function printing (AFP) parameter set to *YES to print the spooled file on an IPDS printer that has the stapler feature installed.
Note: If the printer manufacturer can provide you with a PJL (Printer Job Language) command to control the stapler attachment, then you may be able to create a user-modified Workstation Customizing Object (WSCST) to send that PJL command to the printer at the beginning of every spooled file. However, all *SCS and *AFPDS spooled files printed through printer device or RMTOUTQ would then be stapled, so you would not be able to control the stapling function on a per-spooled-file basis, unless you used two devices or RMTOUTQs to print -- one with the *WSCST object to perform the stapling function and one without the *WSCST object.
