Troubleshooting
Problem
This technote identifies a potential solution to the error, Small Talk/V: Virtual machine stack overflow, that might occur when adding traceability to or from certain requirements in an IBM® Rational® RequisitePro® project.
Cause
The full error message that might appear is as follows:
Internal error
A stack overflow error has occurred.
You are recommended to exit the workbench.
Subsequent errors may happen and may terminate the workbench without warning.
See the .log file for more details.
Do you want to exit the workbench
JVM terminated. Exit code=-1073741819c:\sdt\ibm\sdp70\jdk\jre\bin\javaw.exe
This issue is potentially caused by a circular trace. Circular traces should not be possible and warning messages should be displayed but they do sometimes get created.
Resolving The Problem
This issue can be resolved by finding and removing the circular trace.
A circular trace is, for example, when Requirement1 is traced to Requirement2, Requirement2 is traced to Requirement3, and Requirement3 is traced back to Requirement1. This example creates an endless traceability reference because it is a circular reference.
The best way to find the circular trace is to create or open the traceability tree view that shows the requirement that produced the error.
Expand this requirement in the traceability tree view by clicking the expansion signs for this requirement one by one in the tree. At some point you should see that one of the requirements traces to a requirement that was in expanded in this tree before. From this point forward you can keep expanding forever. (see example below).
An example of a circular trace found is:
In the example below, removing trace from S1 to ASSET1 resolves the problem.
