Special Instructions for Restoring HMC Version 8.8.1

Problem

Special Scratch Installation Instructions for HMC Version 8.8.1 when current HMC backup will be restored.

Resolving The Problem

These instructions should only be used for a scratch installation of an HMC at base version V8.8.1 when a hardware or software failure occurred during normal operation requiring reload of the HMC, and a current HMC Backup (Critical Console Data) is available and will be restored.

Do one of the following to obtain V8.8.1 Recovery media and corrective service fixes SP1 (MH01420), MH01474 and MH01468:

o Download the HMC Version 8.8.1.0 Recovery DVD: HMC_Recovery_V8R810_1.iso
o Download the corrective service image SP1 HMC_Update_V8R810_SP1.iso
o Download the corrective service image MH01474.iso
o Download the corrective service image MH01468.iso
o Burn the recovery image to as an image (not as data) to DVD-R media. For SP1 (MH01420), MH01474 and MH01468, either burn the iso files as data to DVD-R, or copy to USB flash drive
OR
o Order the V8.8.1 recovery media DVD: MH01419.
o Order the corrective service fix SP1 MH01420 on DVD
o Order the corrective service fix MH01474 on DVD
o Order the corrective service fix MH01468 on DVD

Steps to recover an HMC at base version 8.8.1:

1. Install V8.8.1 using Recovery Media
a.Insert V8.8.1 Recovery Media in the HMC's DVD drive.
b.Stop and restart the HMC. The HMC reads the media in the DVD-RAM drive and displays the Install/Backup/Restore wizard window. Note: If the HMC fails to restart from optical, the boot manager may need be called (in other words, press F12 during the boot process) in order to get the HMC to boot from the optical drive.
c.Select Install, and click Next.
d.Select Install from Media, and click Next.
e.Click Finish to start the Install process.


f.When the install is complete, the following options are displayed:

1) Restore critical console data from DVD-RAM (Install).
2) Restore upgrade data from DVD-RAM media (Upgrade from older Version/Release).
3) Finish the installation.

Select Option 3 to Finish the installation. Do not select to restore critical console data.
h.Log on to the HMC with user hscroot, password abc123


2. Install Corrective Service Fix SP1

To install SP1, load the media on the HMC:
- If using DVD, load media into the DVD drive on the HMC.
- If using USB flash drive, plug flash drive into USB port. Wait until you hear three beeps (or approximately one minute) for the HMC to detect the flash drive.

a In the HMC Navigation pane, select Updates.
b In the Work pane, click the Update HMC button. The "HMC Install Corrective Service Wizard" panel is displayed.
c On the Current HMC Driver Information panel, click Next.
d On the Select Service Repository panel, click Removable Media, then click Next.
e On the Installation and Configuration Options panel, select either CD-ROM or DVD-RAM, or USB Flash Memory Device, then click Next.
f On the Select Service Package panel,
Data files: click HMC_Update_V8R810_SP1.iso, then click Next.
DVD image: select media image - no description, then click Next.
g On the Confirm Service Installation panel, click Finish .
The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the DVD and begins the installation process.

h The HMC Install Corrective Service Progress panel indicates "Corrective Service installation was successful". Then, click OK.

i. Stop and restart the HMC after the installation of the update has completed. The restart ensures all changes are available immediately. To reboot immediately, select Yes.

It is mandatory that you stop and restart the HMC.

j At the Hardware Management Console login prompt, log in with user id hscroot and password abc123



3. Install Corrective Service Fix MH01474

To install MH01474, load the media on the HMC:
- If using DVD, load media into the DVD drive on the HMC.
- If using USB flash drive, plug flash drive into USB port. Wait until you hear three beeps (or approximately one minute) for the HMC to detect the flash drive.

a In the HMC Navigation pane, select Updates.
b In the Work pane, click the Update HMC button. The "HMC Install Corrective Service Wizard" panel is displayed.
c On the Current HMC Driver Information panel, click Next.
d On the Select Service Repository panel, click Removable Media, then click Next.
e On the Installation and Configuration Options panel, select either CD-ROM or DVD-RAM, or USB Flash Memory Device, then click Next.

Data files: click MH01474.iso, then click Next.
DVD image: select media image - no description, then click Next.
g On the Confirm Service Installation panel, click Finish .

4. Install Corrective Service Fix MH01468

To install MH01468, load the media on the HMC:
- If using DVD, load media into the DVD drive on the HMC.
- If using USB flash drive, plug flash drive into USB port. Wait until you hear three beeps (or approximately one minute) for the HMC to detect the flash drive.

a In the HMC Navigation pane, select Updates.
b In the Work pane, click the Update HMC button. The "HMC Install Corrective Service Wizard" panel is displayed.
c On the Current HMC Driver Information panel, click Next.
d On the Select Service Repository panel, click Removable Media, then click Next.
e On the Installation and Configuration Options panel, select either CD-ROM or DVD-RAM, or USB Flash Memory Device, then click Next.
f On the Select Service Package panel,
Data files: click MH01468.iso, then click Next.
DVD image: select media image - no description, then click Next.
g On the Confirm Service Installation panel, click Finish .
The HMC interface retrieves the update package from the DVD and begins the installation process.

h The HMC Install Corrective Service Progress panel indicates "Corrective Service installation was successful". Then, click OK.

i. Stop and restart the HMC after the installation of the update has completed. The restart ensures all changes are available immediately. To reboot immediately, select Yes.

It is mandatory that you stop and restart the HMC.

j At the Hardware Management Console login prompt, log in with user id hscroot and password abc123



5.Restore HMC Backup (critical console data).
a.In the Navigation pane, select HMC Management.
b.In the Work pane, select Restore Management Console Data.
c.Select the Restore from removable media option. Selecting this task sets a property that tells the HMC to restore from the backup media at boot.
d.Insert the USB flash drive that contains the HMC Backup (critical console data).
e.Stop and restart the HMC:

o Select HMC Management in the Navigation pane.
o Select Shut Down or Restart in the Work pane.
o In the Shutdown or Restart popup window, select Restart HMC and click OK.
o Answer the prompt to restore the data.
f.When the reboot completes, sign on with user hscroot and the previous password, which will have been restored from the backup.

6. Install additional Version 8.8.1 recommended fixes

The restore of HMC backup includes any fixes that were installed on the HMC at the time the backup was performed. Refer to the following document for any additional recommended fixes:
