Serial over LAN (SoL) connection may drop when installing VMware ESXi 5.0 on an IBM BladeCenter HS23E or IBM Flex System x220 Compute Node.

Symptom

Serial over LAN (SoL) connection may drop when installing VMware ESXi 5.0 on an IBM BladeCenter HS23E or IBM Flex System x220 Compute Node.

Affected configurations

The system may be any of the following IBM servers:

  • BladeCenter HS23E, type 8038, any model
  • BladeCenter HS23E, type 8039, any model
  • Flex System x220 Compute Node, type 2585, any model
  • Flex System x220 Compute Node, type 7864, any model
  • Flex System x220 Compute Node, type 7906, any model

The system is configured with at least one of the following:

  • VMware ESXi 5.0, any update
  • VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5.0 with IBM Customization Installable, any Update

This tip is not option specific.

Solution

This behavior is corrected in an updated tg3 driver included in VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi) 5.0 U1 with IBM Customization, available for download:
