Snapdiff incremental backup fails with ANS5250E error.

Troubleshooting


Problem

A snapdiff incremental backup is run on an NFS mounted filesystem of an N-Series filer. The snapdiff command fails with the ANS5250E error.

Symptom

The Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client dsmerror.log will show :

03/23/12 13:22:07 ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.
TSM function name : baPerformSnapDiff
TSM function : NULL/invalid parameters passed
TSM return code : 109
TSM file : backsnap.cpp (4298)
03/23/12 13:22:07 ANS2832E Incremental by snapshot difference failed for <filesystem_name>. See the error log for details.
03/23/12 13:22:07 ANS5283E The operation was unsuccessful.

Cause

Required filesets for snapdiff backup are missing.

Diagnosing The Problem

Examine the installed filesets on the system. For example :

$ lslpp -l | grep tivoli.tsm
tivoli.tsm.client.api.64bit
tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit.base
tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit.common
tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit.image
tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit.nas
tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit.web

In this case, the tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit.hdw and tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit.snphdw filesets are not installed.

Resolving The Problem

Use the smitty interface and make sure to install the following filesets :

  • TSM Client 64 - HDW Backup Client
  • TSM Client 64 - NAS Backup Client
  • TSM Client 64 - Snap HDW Backup Client
The filesets are part of the tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit package. For example :

tivoli.tsm.client.ba.64bit
+ 6.3.0.0 TSM Client 64 - Backup/Archive Base Files
+ 6.3.0.0 TSM Client 64 - Backup/Archive Common Files
+ 6.3.0.0 TSM Client 64 - Backup/Archive Java GUI & WEB Client
> + 6.3.0.0 TSM Client 64 - HDW Backup Client
+ 6.3.0.0 TSM Client 64 - IMAGE Backup Client
> + 6.3.0.0 TSM Client 64 - NAS Backup Client
> + 6.3.0.0 TSM Client 64 - Snap HDW Backup Client

Once the filesets are installed, rerun the snapdiff command.
