Slow consolidations due to SQL "Max Degree of Parallelism" setting

Problem

User runs a consolidation. This takes a long time.

Symptom

In one real-life test, the exact same (identical) virtual 16 CPU-core SQL 2008 R2 SP2 server was used (for repeated tests), but only the value of "Max Degree of Parallelism" was varied for each test:


As you can see, the higher the parallelism (0 = all/infinite) the quicker the consolidations run, although there is a 'law of diminishing returns':
