Problem
This article describes causes for ENOMEM and EMFILE errors when running 32-bit Informix Dynamic Server on AIX.
Symptom
The 32-bit IBM® Informix® Dynamic Server (IDS) running on the AIX operating system (OS) stops unexpectedly and you find one or more of the following errors in the message log:
- EMFILE [24] error 24
- ENOMEM [12] error 12
Example:
23:00:11 shmat: [EMFILE][24]: out of shared memory segments, check system SHMSEG
or
23:10:11 shmat: [ENOMEM][12]: out of shared memory segments, check system SHMMAX
You can verify that your database server version is 32-bit by checking the version number to verify that the first letter after the second period is a U.
Example:
Database server version 10.00.UC5 has a U after the second period so it is a 32-bit database server. Database server version 9.40.FC8 has an F after the second period so it is not 32-bit release (F indicates it is 64-bit).
