Question & Answer
Question
This document describes some of the common things to try when setting up a scanner on an IBM® ImagePlus® Workstation Program (IWPM) for a Windows® workstation.
Answer
1. Confirm that your Image and Scanner Interface Specification (ISIS) scanner driver is up-to-date.
Make sure that the scanner you want to connect has an ISIS driver. IWPM does not support TWAIN drivers. Nor does IWPM work with the new PaperStream IP (ISIS) drivers provided by Fujitsu. More information about ISIS drivers can be found here.
The ISIS driver is usually provided with the scanner from the manufacturer. Before setting up IWPM with your scanner, it is recommended that you go to the EMC Captiva ISIS Scanner Drivers web site to find out if the driver you are using is the most current one available for your model of scanner. Make note of the "Driver name" for your scanner model. Scanner drivers have a *.PXN extension and reside in the C:\Windows\PIXTRAN directory. Usually any setup utility provided by the scanner manufacturer places the appropriate *.PXN files in the PIXTRAN directory of Windows. You can check that your scanner driver is the most current by viewing the properties of the "Driver name" file that contains a PXN extension in your C:\Windows\PIXTRAN directory. If your driver is not the most current, or you are not sure, you can often download an updated version of the driver from the scanner manufacturer's web site.
Make sure that the ISIS scanner driver supports the Windows operating system you are using and the connection method you are using, such as SCSI card, USB, FireWire, etc.
2. Update ImagePlus Workstation Program for Windows.
Make sure that you are running the latest build and fix pack for IWPM for Windows. To check your IWPM build, see Technote 1416270.
If you find you are not running the latest build on Windows Vista, you can download it from our fixes web site. All languages are contained within the IWPMv23fp2a.zip file. The Readme_fp2a.txt file has the installation instructions. There are also individual fixes on this Web site that have been released since the latest fix pack build. They are documented in the interimAPARlisting.txt file. Download and install any individual fixes that pertain to scanning or, better yet, download the IO_Rollup zip file that contains all the fixes since the last build.
If you want to run IWPM on Windows 7, you'll need to contact us for the installation code. The build we provide contains all the APAR fixes through January, 2013.
3. Obtain the current IBMISIS.DLL.
If you have trouble when creating your scanner Document Type Profile (DTP) inside IWPM, it is likely that you have a scanner model that requires updated IBMISIS.DLL and IBMISIS2.DLL files. It is always a good idea to obtain the latest version of these files, which reside in C:\EVN\BIN. The IBMISIS.DLL and IBMISIS2.DLL should be Version 1.63, which you can check in the properties of those files. If yours are not this version, they can be downloaded from our fixes web site.
4. Try to scan outside of IWPM.
If you are unable to scan using IWPM, you can try the Pixel ScanOnly utility because it removes IWPM from the process and will confirm that the Windows operating system can talk to the scanner by using the appropriate connection card and ISIS driver. This utility is available as a ScanOnly.zip from this web site and consists of an EXE and a CHN file. While this utility does not display the image, it allows the user to select the scanner, scan an image, and view stats on the sheet read. This is useful when trying to isolate a failing component. Unzip the ScanOnly.zip and add the files to a directory of your choice, or they can go in C:\EVN. Run the scnonlyn.exe. To get started, click on "Scan" and "Select Scanner". Try scanning several pages to make sure it does not fail. Any errors must be resolved before scanning in IWPM will work.
